This week I shot a roll of film for the first time in over eight years. It had been so long that I had to watch a youtube video on how to load the film – which I kind of feel ridiculous about now, but it's better to do that than end up with thirty-six frames of nothing, right?
The funny thing is that my old film camera had been sitting in a box five feet away from my desk for the last several years. I've had it since college, and before it was mine, it belonged to my parents. So I shot a test roll, brought it to the photo lab, waited a few days, then picked it back up. Not all of them turned out, but these ones I'm happy with, especially because I didn't do any post-processing on them. (I don't think post-processing is bad, but it just makes me happy to not need to do it.)
With film, you only have so many exposures, and there's no checking how it came out right after you've pressed the shutter, and there's no redos. Each one really counts. It's one of the many aspects that appeals to me – the weight of each photograph, the permanence of it.
Hope you have a wonderful weekend.
(Shot with a Canon A-1 + Fuji Provia 400x film, except the very first photo, which is digital.)
